This skill set will help you become a capable leader who recognises that effective business management requires and facilitates the achievement of organisational goals.

About the Diploma of Leadership and Management

The BSB51915 Diploma of Leadership and Management is a widely focused course, suited to many different vocations, and is designed particularly for people wanting to upskill in a number of leadership and management areas. It is designed specifically for supervisors or middle managers that have responsibility for a team of people, as well as those who participate in operational planning and are involved in change management. To obtain the full BSB51915 Diploma of Leadership and Management, you need to complete 12 units of competence. Career Pathways There are a number of career pathways for graduates of this qualification, particularly in the Aged Care Services Sector.   These could include (among others)
  • Team leader
  • Service Manager
  • Business Development Manager
  • Training Manager
  • Senior Manager
  • Human Resources Manager
  • Executive Management / CEO

How long will the course go for?

The Building organisational capability in the Aged Services Sector in Tasmania skill set will start May 2018.  Students have up to 2 years to complete the assessment requirements of the units.

How will we deliver this skill-set?

This skill set will combine face to face workshops AND your own individual study. We may also take into consideration your current work duties when determining whether you have met the requirements of a unit. Generally, there will be ONE workshop every 4 to 6 weeks.

How much will this skill-set cost?

The cost of this skill set is: $3750.00 Only 20% of this fee is payable by the student (or their organisation.) This fee is payable PRIOR to starting the course.  Please note there are very limited places for this skill set and it is heavily subsidised by Skills Tasmania. Students (or their organisation) are only required to pay an initial contribution of 20% of the course fee. If you enrol and consistently fail to attend the workshops and / or fail to hand in your assessments, you will be billed for the entire course fee. The funding of these skill sets is dependent on students attending the course AND handing in their assessments, so please ensure that you are able to commit to the course requirements PRIOR to signing up.

Skill set text book

You must have access to Kris Cole’s Management Theory and Practice 6th edition.  If you need to purchase a copy, we can facilitate this for you.  We will pay 50% of the cost of the book. There is a $50 charge for a hard copy of the text book: Management Theory and Practice 6th edition.   Alternatively, you can purchase a e-book version for $44.95 from Cengage: If you purchase an e-book version, we will reimburse you $25 for the cost of the book.

How much time should you set aside for each unit?

The time commitment for each of these units will vary.  Depending on your current job role, you should allocate at least 10 to 12 hours per unit (not including the workshop itself) to the completion of questions and assignments.  You should also set aside time for reading the text, references and person time.  The amount of time to set aside will vary from person to person depending on the amount of knowledge and skill they bring to the course.  For some people, the amount of time required to complete a unit may be less – particularly if they are already doing some of the things that the units require. For example, Manage Operational Plans will require you to develop plans.  If you have already done some or all of the activities required by assignments as part of your role, you can submit these as evidence.  For others who have not had the opportunity to undertake activities required by the assignments, more time will be required in research and writing.

This course has an entry requirement that you are currently employed in the Aged Care Services sector in Tasmania AND are recommended by your organisation to attend.

Can I get recognition for things that I am already doing?

Yes.  If you believe you have a previously acquired skills, either through work and/or life experience or through formal training, you can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).  You can find out more about what RPL can mean for you in our student handbook.  You can access that here: If you believe you have the relevant skills and abilities that you have learned in your past, please discuss this with us. We will discuss the evidence requirements you will need to provide and any supporting documentation required.

Organisational support

You are very likely to need the support of your organisation in order to successfully complete this course.  Support is likely to include:

  • Release from work to attend workshops. Students MUST attend workshops
  • Opportunities to participate in leadership and organisational activities that support the objectives of the program.
  • Time to complete assessments. Organisations are STRONGLY encouraged to support staff to complete assessments during work hours as the assessment are highly relevant to the work roles.

About this workshop. This workshop will focus on the development and use of emotional intelligence to increase your self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management in the context of the workplace. The workshop will support you to develop skills including the ability to identify the impact of your own emotions on others in the workplace, recognising and appreciating the emotional strengths and weaknesses of others and promoting the development of the emotional intelligence in others and utilising your own emotional intelligence to maximise team outcomes.

About this workshop. This workshop will explore your role in establishing, supporting and managing positive workplace relationships with co-workers and teams. The workshop will focus on developing systems and processes to manage ideas and information sharing and how effective communication and feedback play a vital role in effective workplace relationships. It will also explore resolving difficulties and conflicts and how providing strong and effective leadership can help managers provide guidance and support to teams and co-workers in their workplace.

About this workshop. This workshop will focus on developing your skills to make presentations to customers, clients and others as well as negotiate persuasively. The workshop will discuss topics around communicating clearly, using a variety of communication styles and anticipating reactions and counter-arguments from others. We will also look at developing leadership skills to manage and lead teams and meetings more effectively.

This workshop discusses the skills and knowledge needed in the planning, recruitment and support for people in a range of work arrangements, including full and part time employees, casual labour, contractors, fixed term, virtual teams, distributed teams, offsite/home workers and volunteers. The workshop will also focus on developing communication and consultation strategies to maximise resource flexibility whilst retaining organisational structure.

About this workshop. This workshop will explore how you might implement digital solutions into your organisation (without blowing it up!). We will focus on how you can identify and evaluate technology opportunities and access technological expertise. We also take a close look at change management and how new technologies are likely to impact on you as an individual, on the team and on the organisation as a whole. The workshop will also discuss developing and implementing policies and procedures surrounding the implementation of new technologies.
